Industrial Polyurethane Sheet & Rod Supply & Properties

Quick Answer

Polyurethane is an elastomer plastic known for its high impact strength, abrasion resistance, and excellent cut & tear strength. Available in a wide range of hardnesses, typically from 60A to 90D for iPlasticSupply's products, it is processed by casting into molds. This versatile material is ITAR and RoHS compliant and frequently replaces rubber, fiberglass, steel, and aluminum in demanding applications across automotive, aerospace, and defense industries.

What is Polyurethane and its hardness ranges?

Polyurethane is in the Elastomer family of plastics, and is available in different levels of hardness (Durometers). Because of the numerous different ways that this material can be manufactured, please inquire directly so we can properly process your order.

Hardness is measured by the Shore or durometer scale. Polyurethane falls into the range between 10A and 90D (see material properties for details). Our Polyurethane sheet and rod generally are made in the 60A – 90D hardness range.

This material is used to replace rubber, fiberglass, steel, aluminum, and ceramics in certain situations. This does not mean that it works for every application or that it would be a perfect substitute for any of materials mentioned.

Polyurethane is processed by casting the material into molds, and allowing the mixture to cure. It also offers flexibility in it’s ability to be cast with a fabric surface, enabling bonding to metal and other urethanes.

Polyurethane falls outside of the standard plastic classifications and into the Elastomer family. This means that when a force is applied, the material easily returns to it’s original shape. A notable benefit of using this material is the wide range of durometers.

  • High Impact Strength and Load Bearing Capacity
  • Abrasion Resistance
  • Excellent Cut & Tear Strength
  • Resistance to Oils & Solvents
  • Long Flex Life and High or Low Resilience
  • Wide Range of Hardness/Durometer Rating (60A – 90D)
  • Good Hydrolytic Stability

Polyurethane is ITAR compliant, and Polyurethane is RoHS compliant.

Major industries that have applications with polyurethane are: automotive, aerospace, electronics, defense, power presses/dies, mining, paperboard, material handling, and more.

Typical applications include:

  • Arc shield on railroad cars, replacing fiberglass parts that cost too much due to repair
  • Wheels on carts, trolleys, skateboards, and similar applications that require load bearing capacity and wear resistance
  • Gaskets, seals, and other applications where rubber might be used
  • Rigid foam insulation and flexible foam seating

Sheet:

Most Sheets come in 48″ X 48″ sizes.
