HDPE – High Density Polyethylene

This is one of the most common questions we are asked. While there are many plastic sheet materials that can be used for food contact, one of the most economical and approved materials is FDA Approved HDPE (High Density Polyethylene).

High Density Polyethylene is a very popular and inexpensive performance plastic material. It is light weight, excellent for food contact, can be heat welded and is non-stick.

HDPE is a light weight – (Low Specific Gravity – Floats in Water) yet it is very stiff and strong. HDPE is a common material used in cutting boards, wear and abrasion resistant applications, excellent for chemical resistant applications, and can handle extreme low temperatures (gets brittle at -110° F).

HDPE sheet is easy to clean, is very durable and can not be chemically bonded, yet it can be heat welded or RF welded. This tough material is very impact resistant, and is stain, odor and moisture resistant.

HDPE is one of the most common food grade cutting surfaces. Light weight, low cost, wear resistant, easy to clean, durable and FDA – food grade approved. The most common color is natural, which is a non-pigmented milky white. Other colors are available with minimum orders.

There are 2 other Polyethylene products that are readily available: LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) and UHMW-PE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene). The LDPE is a softer and more flexible material than the HDPE and is commonly used for stiffeners in furniture, or sew-able applications.

What is UHMW-PE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene)?

UHMW-PE is a unique material in that it looks and feels like the HDPE, but the molecular chain is much longer and therefor is dramatically more wear resistant. UHMW is compression molded rather than extruded like HDPE. The molecular chain of UHMW doesn’t flow like HDPE, but rather needs heat and pressure to form sheets or rods. The process used to produce UHMW is generally ‘compression molding’. This is a much longer manufacturing process than the HDPE. Tremendous heat and pressure in a large compression molding press is required to make UHMW sheet.

Acetal/Delrin

Acetal Copolymer and Dupont Delrin, (now TJC LP Delrin) Homopolymer are also excellent for food processing equipment applications. Both materials are available in Natural (white) or Black. Both materials are excellent choices as they are wear resistant, food grade, machinable and extremely durable. The Acetal materials are very popular with clients that want quality food grade performance plastic material that machines extremely well. Our quality American Made materials are supplied with certification and lot and batch traceability back to the manufacture (available on most materials).

Other Food Grade Performance Plastics

Many performance plastics are engineered and designed for use in demanding applications, including Food Grade applications. While the HDPE, UHMW and Acetal/Delrin materials may be the most popular food grade performance plastic, there are several other quality materials that are food grade. 1 What is the best plastic sheet for food processing equipment?

The most common and economical FDA-approved plastic sheet for food processing equipment is HDPE (High Density Polyethylene). HDPE is extruded and more economical. UHMW is compression molded using high heat and pressure, making it more expensive but the preferred choice for high-wear food processing applications such as conveyor liners, guide rails, and star wheels. Both are FDA approved for food contact.

4 Can HDPE sheet be welded?

Yes. HDPE sheet can be heat welded or RF (radio frequency) welded to fabricate tanks, bins, and food processing structures. Unlike many plastics, HDPE cannot be chemically bonded with solvent cements — mechanical fastening or thermal welding are the only viable joining methods.

5 What is the difference between LDPE and HDPE?

LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) is softer and more flexible than HDPE. While HDPE is rigid and stiff — ideal for cutting boards and structural food equipment components — LDPE is commonly used for flexible applications such as furniture stiffeners or sew-able materials. Both are food-safe polyethylene grades, but HDPE is the standard specification for food processing equipment sheet.

6 Is Acetal or Delrin good for food processing equipment?

Yes. Both Acetal Copolymer and DuPont Delrin (Acetal Homopolymer) are excellent choices for machined food processing equipment components. They are wear resistant, dimensionally stable, available in Natural (white) or Black, and suitable for food contact applications. Acetal is commonly specified for gears, bearings, rollers, timing screws, and other precision-machined food equipment parts.

7 What plastic cutting board material is best for commercial kitchens?

HDPE is the most popular plastic cutting board material for commercial and industrial kitchens. It is FDA approved, NSF certified in food-grade grades, non-stick, odor and stain resistant, easy to sanitize, and low cost. For higher-wear applications or where maximum abrasion resistance is required, UHMW-PE cutting surfaces are a superior alternative.
